Just 21 km from Tarapoto, perched atop the town of Lamas, stands a structure that looks straight out of a medieval fairytale: the Castle of Lamas. It’s one of Peru’s most unique landmarks—not because of its age, but due to its style and the striking contrast it creates with the Amazonian surroundings.
The castle was built in 2005 by Italian entrepreneur Nicola Felice, who was captivated by the charm of Lamas. Inspired by European architecture, he constructed this multi-level castle complete with towers, bridges, mosaic-decorated halls, sculptures, murals, and a breathtaking panoramic view of the valley.
But Lamas offers much more than just the castle. It’s an ancestral town home to the Quechua-Lamista community, who proudly preserve their traditions, language, and traditional clothing.
Recommended Activities:
- - Explore the interior of the castle and its terraces
- - Visit the viewpoint and Lamas’ Main Square (Plaza de Armas)
- - Shop for handicrafts in the Wayku neighborhood
- - Join cultural workshops or taste local products like coffee, cacao, or exotic ice creams
Traveler Tip:
Lamas is perfect for a half-day visit. We recommend bringing a hat and a camera. The entrance fee to the castle is symbolic—and absolutely worth it.
